The COMESA Bankers' Association is one of the official organs of the COMESA (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa). COMESA Bankers' Association has worked to promote and strengthen links between banks in the sub-region. Along with the other three COMESA institutions-the Trade and Development Bank (PTA Bank), the COMESA Clearing House and the PTA Reinsurance Company - the Association has played a vital role in providing a forum for exchange of information on banking practices in the sub-region.

The COMESA member states have recognised that unless a large enough economic space can be created to attract and give guarantees to domestic, cross-border and foreign direct investment, the transformation of these economics from extreme dependence to self-reliance cannot be realised within the foreseeable future. (See COMESA Profile)

At the same time, it has been recognised that countries with small populations or per capita gross domestic product (GDP) will continue to find it difficult to attract foreign investment unless this is within the context of a wider common market. The COMESA Bankers' Association was created in recognition of the pivotal role banks play in this development process.
